As manufacturer of Ferrous Orotate we hereby state the following facts about the drug:
Iron is a mineral that is naturally present in many foods, added to some food products, and available as a dietary supplement. Iron is an essential component of hemoglobin, an erythrocyte (red blood cell) protein that transfers oxygen from the lungs to the tissues. Iron is an essential component in many enzyme reactions and has an important role in the immune system.
Orotic acid is an intermediate in pyrimidine biosynthesis, which is required for DNA and RNA synthesis. Orotic acid is a pyrimidine monocarboxylic acid that is uracil bearing a carboxy substituent at position C-6.
Another benefit of orotic acid in the diet of newborns may be the establishment of the anaerobic orotic acid-degrading intestinal microflora. The interest in the application of orotic acid as a growth-enhancer for livestock may have been boosted when the biogene factor vitamin B13 – originating in distillers dried solubles in the United States-was identified as orotic acid.
Experimental studies: The possibility of a pharmacological use for orotic acid in humans may have gained impetus predominantly from experimental studies on laboratory animals. The improvement of learning behavior of adult rats, neuroprotective effect for gerbils and cats under transient cerebral ischemia, and optimization of functions in normal and ischemic rat hearts were generally assigned to the precursor role of orotic acid in cells for pyrimidine nucleotides and RNA. Importantly, the penetration of labeled OA into the liver, kidney, spleen, brain of mice, and rats on intravenous or intraperitoneal administration may be different from the oral application. When OA from the intestine is transported via the portal vein to the liver in humans, the circulating amount of OA could be largely limited by its renal excretion. Furthermore, the uptake of circulating OA by human erythrocytes, and its return to the blood as uridine, may generally keep orotate at a very low concentration in serum
The positive impact of orotic acid preparations claimed for humans are highlighted by promises given in the public domain, such as
- Beneficial cardiovascular effects
- Energy provision
- Improvement of body composition
- Enhanced athletic performance
